In recent hours, new images and videos of the enigmatic Shenyang J-50 stealth fighter—also referred to as J-XD or JCDS—would provide indications that Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), the firm responsible for its development, has begun the 2026 Flight Test Campaign. To date, this aircraft is part of one of the most enigmatic projects in the aerospace industry of the Asian giant, which could be intended either to equip the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) in the future or, alternatively, to serve as a demonstrator for new technologies applied to current and future developments.

The images, reportedly taken at facilities linked to Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, once again show the prototype in flight, although some versions suggest that these could be among the first records associated with flight tests carried out during 2026. However, so far there has been no official confirmation from Chinese authorities regarding the status of the program.
This new sighting adds to a series of previous appearances that began to gain greater relevance toward 2025, when the clearest images to date of the supposed next-generation fighter developed by Shenyang were released. At that time, the records made it possible to identify an unconventional configuration, characterized by a tailless design and a strong emphasis on reducing radar signature.
A parallel development within China’s new generation of fighters
Although the available information remains limited, the Shenyang J-50 stealth fighter is often mentioned alongside other projects under development in China, such as the so-called Chengdu J-36, within the framework of a new generation of aircraft aimed at expanding the country’s air combat capabilities in high-intensity scenarios. It is worth noting that the design of the J-36, developed by Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, is characterized by a larger wingspan and overall size than the aforementioned fighter, in addition to featuring three engines instead of the two used by the J-50.

On this point, in December 2025, the Chinese company Chengdu Aerospace Corporation once again showcased progress in the development of the alleged sixth-generation fighter-bomber Chengdu J-36 for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, after aviation observers detected what would be a third prototype of this aircraft.
In this regard, reports have indicated that Beijing has been accelerating the production of fifth-generation stealth fighters such as the Chengdu J-20 and the Shenyang J-35, while also advancing technologies that could lay the foundation for more advanced platforms, possibly framed within what is considered a future “sixth generation.”

In this context, the most recent images seem to reinforce some of the characteristics already observed in previous records, including an integrated fuselage, large-surface wings, and the absence of traditional vertical stabilizers, suggesting an approach aimed at maximizing stealth and aerodynamic efficiency.
Finally, as is often the case with this type of program, the development of the Shenyang J-50 stealth fighter remains under a high level of secrecy, meaning that much of the available information comes from image analysis and open-source reports. Within this framework, the possible occurrence of a first flight during 2026—still unconfirmed—would mark a new milestone in a program that, so far, has evolved mainly through sporadic appearances and leaks.
