In the context of Operation Epic Fury and Iran’s military response, the island of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean has come under Iranian attack. As a result, the UK will deploy one of its Type 45 destroyers to the region as part of a reinforcement of its defensive posture. The selected ship is HMS Dragon, which will operate alongside armed Wildcat helicopters, amid rising tensions in the Middle East and actions directed against British interests.

HMS Dragon is a Type 45 destroyer specialized in air defense and regarded as one of the most advanced warships of its class. The deployment aims to strengthen the UK’s ability to detect, track, and intercept aerial threats, including drones, in a regional environment characterized by missile strikes and unmanned systems. British authorities indicated that the decision reflects the need to adapt to an operational environment that is constantly evolving.

The destroyer is equipped with the Sea Viper missile system, capable of firing eight missiles in less than ten seconds and guiding up to 16 interceptors simultaneously. Type 45 destroyers have already been tested in real-world operations, including an episode in 2024 in which one of these ships successfully intercepted a missile launched by the Houthis. With this deployment, London seeks to expand its air-defense capacity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The naval reinforcement comes after the UK Armed Forces shot down multiple drones over the past 24 hours at different points across the region. F-35B fighters from the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) downed drones over Jordan, marking the first time an RAF F-35 destroyed a target in operations, with support from Typhoon aircraft and a Voyager tanker. In addition, a UK counter-drone unit neutralized aircraft in Iraqi airspace that were heading toward Coalition forces, while a Typhoon from the joint UK–Qatar 12th Squadron shot down an Iranian one-way attack drone on Monday that was targeting Qatar, using an air-to-air missile.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated: “We are moving quickly to further strengthen our defensive presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.” Regarding the deployed ship, he added that “HMS Dragon brings a world-class air defence capability, and our Wildcat helicopters are armed with Martlet missiles to counter the growing drone threat.” He also said he was “deeply proud of the professionalism and courage of our Armed Forces personnel, who in recent days have acted successfully across the region to protect our allies and defend British interests.”

As part of this reinforcement, two Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles—designed to intercept and destroy drones—will also be deployed. These aircraft will be able to patrol and engage aerial threats, providing an additional layer of defense against unmanned systems in an environment where such attacks have steadily increased.

The dispatch of the Type 45 destroyer and the helicopters adds to measures adopted in recent weeks, including the deployment of radar systems, air defenses, and F-35B fighters to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. In February, the United Kingdom had already reinforced its presence at that strategic installation with RAF fifth-generation aircraft, amid rising tensions involving Iran and its regional allies, and the need to maintain rapid-response capabilities in key areas for British interests.
