Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) recently confirmed that it will move forward with a modernization program for the FA-50PH light fighters currently in service with the Philippine Air Force (PAF), as part of the strengthening of bilateral defense cooperation between Manila and Seoul. The announcement was made through an official statement by the South Korean company, outlining the general scope of the initiative and its alignment with the Philippines’ plans to upgrade its air capabilities.

The announced modernization process, formalized through an agreement valued at 93 billion won (approximately US$ 64 million), covers a total of eleven (11) FA-50PH aircraft currently in service with the Philippine Air Force. The aircraft, which were delivered by KAI between 2015 and 2017, will receive upgrades in avionics, mission systems, and integration with new and more advanced weapons. While the full technical details of the package were not publicly disclosed, the company emphasized that the work will also extend the service life of the airframes, allowing the Southeast Asian country to retain a modernized and tactically valuable air asset capable of operating in an increasingly contested regional environment.

The modernization of the original FA-50PH fleet is part of a broader transformation process within the Philippine Air Force, which for several years has relied on the South Korean light fighter as a central pillar of its combat aviation. These aircraft have been employed in both air defense missions and light attack and patrol operations, consolidating their role as one of the most versatile platforms in the PAF inventory. The acquisition of this initial batch took place in the early 2010s under the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program, with deliveries completed between 2015 and 2017.

This announcement also follows developments from March 2025, when South Korea and the Philippines began negotiations to expand the FA-50 fleet through the acquisition of additional aircraft. These talks concluded on June 3, when Manila officially confirmed the purchase of twelve (12) new FA-50 Block 20 fighters, valued at 1 trillion won (around US$ 700 million). This improved variant features an AESA radar, increased weapons payload, and enhanced operational performance. Deliveries of the new fighters are scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2030.

In particular, the modernization of the existing FA-50PH aircraft aims to and will allow the fleet to be standardized with the future Block 20 units, thereby facilitating interoperability, logistics support, and the training of pilots and ground crews. This convergence is considered key to optimizing fleet performance and maximizing the return on investment made by the Philippines in the KAI FA-50 program.

Finally, the progress in both the modernization and expansion of the Philippine FA-50 fighter fleet will strengthen the country’s capabilities to protect its airspace and maritime domains in a regional environment marked by rising tensions with China and security challenges posed by other state and non-state actors. At the same time, from the perspective of the South Korean company, this move further consolidates KAI’s position as one of Manila’s main industrial partners in the military aviation sector, deepening a relationship that already includes capability transfers, technical support, and long-term cooperation, while opening the door to future joint ventures in military equipment development.
