Peru took a historic step toward the future of its naval industry this Friday the 19th, with the signing of the submarine co-development contract between the Naval Industrial Services (SIMA Peru) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea to equip the Navy.

The signing of the agreement, at the facilities of the Peruvian shipyard in the Callao Naval Base in the presence of the President of the Republic, José Jerí Oré, initiates an ambitious project: the construction of submarines in the country, with real transfer of technology and increasing participation of local industry.

This agreement consolidates the institutional evolution of the Peruvian shipyard, which moves from being an executor to a co-developer—that is, from a recipient of technology to a truly active ally in its adaptation and improvement.

Furthermore, for Peru, the submarine construction program signifies the strengthening of its maritime sovereignty, and will guarantee national security and boost an industrial ecosystem of high added value, integrating engineers, technicians, universities, and local suppliers into a naval cluster.

The agreement includes collaborative design, the technological transfer plan, and national industrial preparation, which will serve as the technical basis for the future co-production of the submarine units.

In a first phase, the initial scope of this co-development will be reflected in two submarine units, expandable according to future requirements of the Peruvian Navy.
