In the midst of the ongoing re-equipment process of the Russian Armed Forces, the Kalashnikov consortium announced the completion of the 2025 contract for the production and delivery of AK-12 automatic rifles, 2023 model. According to information from Rostec, the 5.45 mm caliber rifles were dispatched on time and as agreed to the Ministry of Defense, fully meeting the established commitments. The AK-12 continues to be the standard individual rifle of Russian military personnel and maintains high production levels within annual defense programs.

The 2023 model of the AK-12 represents the most recent evolution of the Kalashnikov system, with improvements introduced following operational experience in the Ukrainian theater. Among the main updates are a new folding diopter sight, a compensator, ambidextrous firing mechanisms, a raised rail notch for the use of optical sights, as well as the removal of the two-round burst mode. These changes helped optimize its accuracy, ergonomics, and ease of maintenance while at the same time maintaining the rifle’s well-known reliability in adverse conditions.
During the year, the company also advanced in the production of the new AK-12K, a shortened version of the standard model developed for assault and reconnaissance units. This rifle, also 5.45 mm caliber, quickly entered the production line and its delivery contract was successfully completed in 2025. Its compact design responds to the mobility and urban combat needs identified by the Russian Armed Forces during recent operations.
The 2025 deliveries add to a series of previous batches distributed in 2024. During that year, the Ground Forces received successive batches of updated AK-12 rifles, consolidating a sustained production flow that dates back to the manufacturing increases announced in 2023. The company emphasized at that time that fulfilling the state order is one of its priorities, noting that, despite design adjustments derived from combat use, production timelines were not affected.

In parallel with the rifle program, Kalashnikov expanded its product line with the presentation of new infantry support systems. In August 2024 it unveiled the RPL-20 light machine gun, belt-fed and available with 590 and 415 mm barrels, capable of sustaining continuous fire with 100- or 200-round boxes. The GP-46 40×46 mm grenade launcher was also presented, designed as an accessory for rifles of the AK family and aimed at increasing the firepower of small units against fortified positions or light vehicles.
The constant development of new versions and complementary equipment confirms the central role that Kalashnikov maintains within the Russian military-industrial complex. With the AK-12 as the backbone of individual armament, the manufacturer continues expanding its design and production capabilities to respond both to the demands of the contemporary battlefield and to the requirements of the Ministry of Defense, ensuring the continuity of a legacy that combines innovation, reliability, and technological adaptation.
