The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the largest ship in the U.S. Navy, continues its operations in the Caribbean with the deployment of F/A-18E Super Hornet aircraft. One of these units was recorded approaching the ship’s flight deck as U.S. forces operate in support of the Operation Southern Spear campaign.

The carrier strike group, accompanied by its escort ships, officially began its activities under the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) area of responsibility. This deployment is part of the U.S. strategy to strengthen its naval presence in the Western Hemisphere and support efforts aimed at interdicting and dismantling Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) operating in Central and South America.
Operations commenced following the order issued by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who directed the strike group to support the presidential directive aimed at countering TCOs and narco-terrorism. “Through unwavering commitment and the precise employment of our forces, we stand ready to confront the transnational threats seeking to destabilize our region,” stated Admiral Alvin Holsey, SOUTHCOM commander. “The deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group represents a critical step in reinforcing our determination to protect the security of the Western Hemisphere and the homeland,” he added.

The carrier’s arrival in the Caribbean marks a new phase of the deployment. On October 24, the Secretary of War ordered the group to leave the Mediterranean and proceed to the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility. On November 4, the USS Gerald R. Ford transited the Strait of Gibraltar, escorted by the Spanish frigate Numancia (F-83), completing its passage into the western Atlantic.
In this context, on November 13 the aircraft carrier and a B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber conducted joint maneuvers in support of SOUTHCOM operations. Eight F/A-18E/F Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing 8 participated in the activity, including units from Strike Fighter Squadrons 31, 37, 87, and 213.
According to information from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Super Hornets operated alongside the B-52H as part of a joint multidomain force, demonstrating the strike group’s ability to coordinate with long-range strategic air platforms. The activity included tactical sequences and interoperability exercises, which also involved the USS Bainbridge (DDG-96), an Arleigh Burke–class Flight IIA destroyer.
With its presence in the Caribbean, the USS Gerald R. Ford continues to integrate into surveillance operations, maritime interdiction, and efforts to combat transnational criminal networks, in line with SOUTHCOM’s objectives in the region.
