Through a brief statement published on October 27, Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyards announced that a new milestone has been reached in the construction of the first MMSC-1 frigate in the U.S. for the Royal Saudi Navy, noting that the vessel is already at the pier awaiting its launch. This marks the company’s preparation to move forward with a new phase of construction and testing of the ship, which will be the first of a series of four acquired by Riyadh to strengthen its surface naval capabilities under the so-called “Project Twaiq.”

It is worth noting that the design of this class is based on the LCS Freedom models in the inventory of the U.S. Navy, being built in collaboration with Lockheed Martin to adapt them to the specific requirements of the Saudi forces. In this sense, the class retains characteristics such as its 118-meter length and combined diesel-and-gas propulsion system, although it differs in its operational approach. Rather than relying on the mission module concept, the ships will arrive fully equipped for multi-domain combat, including anti-air, anti-submarine (thanks to the ability to operate an MH-60R helicopter), and anti-surface systems.

Continuing with a review of their main features, the ships will stand out by incorporating the COMBATSS-21 combat management system produced by Lockheed Martin, as well as a 3D AESA multifunction rotating radar Hensoldt TRS-4D and Link 16 communication systems. Additionally, they are equipped with a BAE Systems Mk 110 57mm main gun and two remotely operated Nexter Narwhal 20mm stations, as well as an Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) with eight cells, also manufactured by the U.S. company, and Mk 32 torpedo launchers, providing a wide array of combat capabilities.

According to Fincantieri Marinette Marine, these features and many others “demonstrate our shipyard’s ability to deliver advanced, multi-purpose surface combat vessels tailored to international defense needs. With cutting-edge capabilities in anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, these ships represent our commitment to global naval cooperation and innovation.” In a later excerpt of the statement, the company also highlighted that these ships are built on U.S. soil, helping to sustain the country’s industrial base, particularly in the state of Wisconsin.
