As part of a broad naval modernization program, the SIMA Perú shipyard (Servicio Industrial de la Marina S.A.) officially began construction of the new multirole frigate destined for the surface fleet of the Peruvian Navy. The ceremony, which marks a new milestone in the history of the Peruvian naval industry, was held with the traditional cutting of the first steel plate in the recently renovated X-40 workshop, with the presence of the commander general of the Navy, the ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Peru, and the general managers of SIMA and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The event formalized the beginning of the work for the first unit that will be built under the cooperation agreement between SIMA Perú and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, a South Korean company with extensive experience in the design and manufacture of military vessels. This project falls under a contract valued at approximately 463 million dollars, which also includes the construction of an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) and two logistical transport units.

The partnership between SIMA and HHI aims not only to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Navy but also to consolidate a national industrial and technological ecosystem. To this end, both entities are working on the incorporation of local suppliers and the technical training of Peruvian personnel. Engineers and technicians from HHI will remain in the country to provide on-site training, transferring advanced knowledge in naval construction with the purpose that SIMA may autonomously build warships in the future.

The program contemplates a broad process of technological transfer and industrial localization. Since late 2024, evaluations have been carried out on national companies with potential for integration into the supply chain, having identified materials and equipment that can be produced locally, such as wiring, paints, kitchen equipment, and structural materials. As the project progresses, national manufacturing of more complex components is expected to increase progressively.

The new frigate, based on the HDF-3200 design from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, will have an approximate displacement of 3,400 tons and will be equipped with state-of-the-art systems. Among them are the electronic warfare systems from the South Korean firm LIG Nex1, which will allow the integration of sensors, weapons systems, and communications under the “Sensor to Shooter” concept. In addition, the Norwegian company Kongsberg Maritime will supply the controllable-pitch propellers, shaft lines, bearings, seals, and associated control systems.

According to the plans established, the frigate will be delivered to the Peruvian Navy in 2029. This program marks a decisive step toward consolidating a sustained national capability for military shipbuilding, placing SIMA Perú and the country’s maritime industry in a new stage of development and regional projection.
