The German Ministry of Defense has confirmed its intention to acquire 14 additional new IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) air defense systems for the German Armed Forces, through a contract estimated at 4.2 billion euros. The decision, which still needs to receive approval from the Bundestag’s Budget Committee, is part of the accelerated modernization effort of the Bundeswehr following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the growing need to strengthen air defense in Europe.

The acquisition of the 14 additional systems responds not only to the need to reinforce national defense but also to Germany’s intention to lead the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), launched in 2022 and supported by more than 20 European countries. With this, Berlin seeks to consolidate a multinational air shield that combines short-, medium-, and long-range capabilities, integrating systems such as the IRIS-T, the American Patriot, and the Israeli Arrow-3.
The 4.2 billion euro investment will be financed through the Special Fund of 100 billion euros approved in 2022 to modernize the Armed Forces, and it adds to other key programs such as the purchase of F-35 fighters, CH-47F Chinook helicopters, and SPIKE anti-tank missiles.

The IRIS-T SLM, combat-proven in Ukraine, has demonstrated an interception rate above 90%, making it one of the most effective systems in its category.
Finally, the new systems will be added to those already acquired in previous phases, making Germany the main operator and financier of the IRIS-T SLM, a system developed by Diehl Defence that has proven its effectiveness in Ukraine by intercepting cruise missiles, drones, and rockets.
