Today, October 29, Airbus Defense and Space achieved another milestone in strengthening the Spanish Air and Space Force’s strategic transport and refueling capabilities. This follows the recent delivery of the second Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport), which has completed its conversion work at the European consortium’s production facility in Getafe.
As part of efforts to expand its transport and refueling capabilities, in 2021 the Ministry of Defense and the Air and Space Force finalized the purchase of three Airbus A330 aircraft, previously operated by the airline Iberia, to be converted into Multi-Role Tanker Transports (MRTT) by Airbus.

The importance of this type of platform for Spain’s power projection and force capabilities is significant, since, in addition to strictly military missions such as troop and personnel transport or aerial refueling, these aircraft also support humanitarian and relief operations, including the aeromedical evacuation of citizens from various parts of the world whenever required.
To date, the conversion program of the Spanish A330s has already reached its first milestone, recorded last April, when Airbus delivered the aircraft “TK-24-03” to the 45th Air Wing, based at Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base. The aircraft recently completed the longest non-stop flight in the service’s history, covering 11,600 kilometers between China and Spain as part of a personnel redeployment operation.
Meanwhile, this second A330 MRTT bears the registration “TK-24-02”. Its delivery had previously been confirmed to Zona Militar by Marta Nogueira Ramírez, Vice President and Head of Business Development in Spain at Airbus Defense, during the International Defense and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF 2025) held last May.
As noted, with the delivery of this second MRTT to the Air and Space Force, only the final unit remains pending. More specifically, the aircraft that arrived at the Getafe facilities last April with the registration “T24-01” will, upon completion of its conversion in 2026, be redesignated as “TK-24-01”.
