Confirming what was reported on August 21, the U.S. Army announced during the AUSA (Association of the United States Army) exposition that it has decided to move forward with the purchase of 86 new M917A3 heavy dump trucks from Mack Defense. This acquisition represents the first step of a broader procurement that could eventually reach up to 450 units. The framework agreement, awarded to the company in June, involves an investment of approximately $221.8 million by Washington, aimed at strengthening the Army’s fleet, which already exceeds 500 vehicles.

Expanding on the details, it is worth recalling that these types of vehicles are used by the U.S. Army for a wide range of tasks, including the construction and maintenance of military bases, as well as the transportation of essential supplies during natural disasters. Based on the Mack Granite chassis, the military variant acquired by the U.S. Army features reinforced axles, full-time all-wheel drive, and raised suspension, complemented by optional armored cabs that provide additional protection for the crew.

Furthermore, these 8×8 vehicles are powered by an MP8 diesel engine that delivers 440 horsepower, fueled by more than 93 gallons of onboard capacity. The M917A3s are also equipped with a six-speed Allison 4500 automatic transmission, along with a power-assisted steering axle that facilitates maneuverability over rough terrain. In terms of payload, each vehicle can carry up to 27 tons, although this figure is reduced by approximately 2.5 tons when fitted with the optional armored cab.

Regarding these capabilities, Mack Defense President David Hartzell stated: “The next generation of military vehicles requires superior mobility and versatility across all terrains and missions—capabilities that Mack military trucks are built to deliver. And now, more than ever, the U.S. Department of Defense needs reliable manufacturers it can count on to provide proven, low-risk solutions backed by comprehensive lifecycle support to ensure sustained readiness.”

Beyond the technical aspects, from a strategic standpoint, analysts consider these trucks a key asset for enabling the U.S. Army to support the ongoing effort to build new infrastructure in critical regions tied to great power competition. In particular, it is expected that the trucks will be of significant use for engineering and construction operations in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, where Army Engineer Regiments are anticipated to deploy them in the near future.

Finally, according to local media reports, the Army’s decision to announce the purchase during the AUSA exposition is seen as a signal that modernizing its ground vehicle fleet remains one of its top priorities. The fact that the contract spans a five-year period is also viewed as a sign of stability and predictability for suppliers involved in the program—something especially valuable in times when defense budgets frequently fluctuate.
