Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX, announced on October 1, 2025, the delivery of the 500th Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 to the U.S. Navy, marking a key milestone in the naval air defense program. This system, designed to intercept advanced aerial threats such as anti-ship missiles, aircraft, and drones, represents a significant evolution over its predecessor, the ESSM Block 1.

The delivery took place under the multi-year contract signed in October 2024, which provides for the acquisition of hundreds of missiles to equip destroyers, frigates, and Ford- and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The ESSM Block 2 incorporates major improvements in active guidance, maneuverability, and engagement capability in saturated threat environments.

In addition to supplying the U.S. Navy, Raytheon has expanded ESSM Block 2 production in collaboration with allied nations. In June 2025, progress was confirmed in the joint program with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for local production of the ESSM Block 2 in Japan, intended to equip Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) destroyers.

This effort is part of the international ESSM production organization, which includes 12 NATO member and partner countries such as Australia, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany. The cooperative framework enables shared technology, reduced costs, and enhanced interoperability in multinational operations.

The ESSM Block 2 has been deployed in multiple international exercises, including RIMPAC, Formidable Shield, and Pacific Vanguard, demonstrating its effectiveness in cooperative air defense scenarios. Its integration into next-generation platforms such as the Constellation-class frigates (FFG-62) and Arleigh Burke Flight III destroyers further reinforces its role as a cornerstone of surface-based air defense.
