The Spanish Navy is preparing to reach a new milestone in its modernization and capability renewal efforts. On October 3, 2025, the S-82 Narciso Monturiol, the second unit of the new S-80 Plus series, will be launched at Navantia’s Cartagena shipyard. The ceremony will mark a decisive step in the renewal of Spain’s submarine capabilities, as the new units will replace the aging Galerna-class, of which only a single unit, the S-71 Galerna, remains in service, already at the limit of its operational life.

The S-82 joins the previously launched S-81 Isaac Peral, currently in sea trials, which will become the first unit to achieve full operational status. Meanwhile, Navantia is advancing with the construction of the remaining units: the S-83 Cosme García, which has already completed the integration of the innovative third-generation bioethanol-based AIP system, and the S-84 Mateo García de los Reyes, currently in the assembly phase of its combat and propulsion systems.

In detail, the Narciso Monturiol has already passed through critical integration stages, including the activation of electrical systems, the initial charging of batteries, and the loading of fuel. Following its launch, it will begin a trial cycle extending from late 2025 through spring 2026, with official delivery to the Navy scheduled for the last quarter of next year. Full operational capability is expected by mid-2027, consolidating its entry into service.

The launch of the submarine comes just days after another historic milestone for Spanish naval construction: the launch of the frigate F-111 Bonifaz, the first unit of the new F-110 class. This program, also led by Navantia, will provide the Navy with five frigates equipped with state-of-the-art combat systems, AESA radar, and advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Ultimately, the coincidence of both milestones within such a short timeframe reflects Navantia’s consolidation phase, with two of the most ambitious programs in Spanish defense progressing in parallel. At the same time, the Spanish Navy is advancing in the recovery of critical submarine capabilities and reinforcing its projection in multinational operations.
