It appears that the long-anticipated process to acquire 24 new multirole fighters to modernize the defense capabilities of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) has finally entered its decisive phase. This timeline aligns with the recent statement by Commander General Carlos Enrique Chávez Cateriano, who indicated that this month would be pivotal in finalizing the deal, which represents a $3.5 billion investment.

Peru’s President, Dina Boluarte, recently declared that “modernizing the air fleet is key to ensuring national security, development, and emergency response capabilities in our country.”

Although she did not refer directly to the new interceptors, her statement is symbolically significant, having been made during a visit to La Joya Air Base—the home of the Dassault Mirage 2000P/DP. Located in southern Peru (Arequipa), this combat unit hosted the highest authorities of Peru’s military aviation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the French fighter jet’s introduction into the FAP.

As a reminder, it was around this time 40 years ago that the first FAP fighter pilots began flight training at Air Base No. 118 in Mont-de-Marsan, in the French town of Bordeaux.

France, Sweden, and the United States have all been actively engaged in talks with Lima regarding this acquisition, where the final price is not the only decisive factor—offset agreements are also of considerable importance.

While Saab, one of the three finalists, has showcased impressive projects it has carried out with other clients, Dassault and Lockheed Martin have opted to maintain a lower public profile.

Peru is leaning into symbolism: July marks the anniversary of the FAP, which includes various commemorative activities and honors the major combat operations it participated in during the 1941 conflict. The year 2025 could become another historic milestone—signaling the beginning of a true technological revolution for the Peruvian Air Force.
