As part of the TH-X Project, aimed at modernizing the training fleet of Naval Aviation, the Brazilian Navy began the incorporation of its new Airbus H125 Esquilo B3e helicopters during the current month of April. The first unit, which will be designated as IH-18, began its reception process at the Helibrás facilities in Itajubá (MG) by the 1st Helicopter Instruction Squadron (EsqdHI-1).

The reception of the new helicopter involves a rigorous technical procedure led by a team composed of pilots and mechanical personnel from EsqdHI-1, along with specialists from the Flight Test and Research Institute (IPEV) and the Institute for Industrial Promotion (IFI). This inspection covers everything from the physical verification of the aircraft to document review, systems testing, and technical flights, with the goal of ensuring that the new asset meets contractual and operational requirements.

The TH-X Project aims to replace the current Bell Jet Ranger III (IH-6B) helicopters used for training naval aviators with a more modern, safe, and efficient platform. The new Airbus H125 (Esquilo B3e) helicopters were selected for their robustness, versatility, and cutting-edge technology—features that will raise the standard of the Officer Aviation Training Course (CAAvO), while also enabling use in other operational missions.

It is worth noting that in September 2022, Brazil announced the purchase of 27 H125 helicopters for its Armed Forces, with the goal of replacing both the AS350 Écureuil (H-50 Esquilo) operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), and the UH-12 Esquilo and Bell Jet Ranger III operated by the Navy.

The H125s are being produced under license in Brazil at the Helibrás plant—a local subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters—which also assembles the H225M medium helicopters in their various versions for the Armed Forces. The new models will be equipped with dual “full glass” G500H TXi digital cockpits, VEMD (Vehicle & Engine Multifunction Display), and will be compatible with night vision goggles (NVG). Additionally, they will include mission equipment such as a hoist and hook for search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Meanwhile, the FAB is also moving forward with its own incorporation schedule. In December 2024, the Coordinating Committee of the Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC) received the first of its new H125s, registered as FAB 8821. This unit was assigned to the 1st/11th “Gavião” Squadron for training tasks, marking a significant step forward in the training of rotary-wing pilots.
