According to information provided by the National Defense Ministry of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay through its channels, the logistics ship ROU 04 ‘General Artigas’ departed on Monday, the 15th of the current month, heading to Antarctica as part of the summer Antarctic campaign, for the resupply of the Artigas Antarctic Scientific Base.

During this voyage, the ship embarked with a crew of 128 members and a total of 40 tons of cargo, including an auxiliary vessel and a water treatment plant for the Uruguayan base.

This ship underwent re-motorization tasks that concluded in the year 2022. The work on the ROU Artigas was carried out locally at the Navy Dock – Cerro (SCRA), standing out for the replacement of the old Maybach diesel engines with the new CAT 3516c engines, with an investment reaching USD 6,500,000.

With a displacement of 3,984 tons, the ROU Artigas is a logistics supply ship of the Lüneburg class, incorporated by the National Navy of Uruguay in 2004. Launched in 1966, it served with the German Navy until 2003 under the name Freiburg (A 1413).

This ship was converted between 1981 and 1984 to serve as a logistics ship for type 122 frigates. It is equipped with a deck for helicopter operations in vertrep maneuvers, along with a hangar for light Naval Aviation helicopters and new articulated cranes.
